Abstract

The current version of the ACME Land Model (ALM) makes numerous simplifications which will no longer be valid as the spatial resolution of ALM increases. Presently, ALM assumes that the Earth’s surface is flat and has an unobstructed of the sky, thereby neglecting local topographic features (e.g., slope, aspect) and non-local topographic features (e.g., terrain shading, sky view factor) impact the amount of solar radiation reaching the surface. Additionally, ALM neglects lateral fluxes of water and simulates subsurface hydrologic processes only in the vertical direction. ALM’s subsurface thermal model does not account for heat transfer associated with water movement. Recent model developments to address above-mentioned shortcomings include: (i) explicit accounting of local and non-local topographic features on surface solar radiation; (ii) developing an infrastructure to account for grid-level topology in the ALM; (iii) extension of the VSFM to incorporate lateral flows; and (iv) re-casting the ALM-v1 thermal model in PETSc as a first step in the development of ALM-v2 thermal model. Preliminary results are presented for the aforementioned model developments activities.
