AI-Embedded Engineering: Accelerating SimBoard Development
Tom Vo
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Abstract: This talk explores how Tom Vo used AI throughout the software engineering lifecycle to accelerate SimBoard development, from legacy code analysis and architecture planning to UI/UX, implementation, testing, documentation, and deployment. This approach helped deliver a deployed, full-stack prototype in four to five months. The case study presents a practical, human-guided AI workflow that other E3SM developers can adopt using E3SM’s existing GitHub Copilot access.

In addition to the slides and webinar recording, I thought it’d be useful to share a how-to guide to replicate the agentic AI software dev workflow I used for SimBoard.
Here’s the Confluence page I just created: https://e3sm.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ED/pages/6665437194/How-to+A+practical+agentic+AI+workflow+for+software+development+with+GitHub+Copilot
Feel free to comment or reach out if you have questions. Happy to help!
