Toward Strongly Coupled Land–Atmosphere Data Assimilation for E3SM Using DART
Zhaoxia Pu
University of Utah
Abstract: This talk presents the project team's recent progress in developing a strongly coupled land–atmosphere data assimilation (DA) capability for the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) using the ensemble-based Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART). Early developments include refinement of a prototype E3SM–DART system for atmospheric assimilation, construction of an ELM–DART framework for incorporating satellite soil moisture observations (e.g., SMAP), and testing ensemble strategies designed to represent cross-component covariances essential for coupled DA. Preliminary results highlight improvements in atmospheric analyses and demonstrate promising land–atmosphere feedback signals emerging from the coupled approach. Ongoing work focuses on extending these capabilities to higher-resolution E3SM configurations and evaluating the benefits of coupled DA for producing more physically consistent Earth system states..
