QuadTune: A poor man’s tuner for expensive global models
Vince Larson

Abstract: A useful method to explore parameter sensitivities of global physics models is perturbed parameter experiments (PPEs). However, PPEs require a hundred or more global simulations, and many interesting global models — such as global convection-permitting models and coupled ocean-atmosphere models — are expensive. Hence reducing the cost of tuning is desirable.
To reduce the number of global simulations needed, we are developing a ``poor man’s” tuner, based on a simple quadratic emulator. The simple quadratic form requires us to run only 2P+1 global simulations, and it also aids interpretability, which in turn allows us to create diagnostic plots that elucidate model structural errors.
