Implementation of subgrid approaches accounting for unresolved topography in MPAS-Ocean

Abstract:
Faithfully representing topography and bathymetry at sufficiently high grid resolution is known to be a crucial factor in obtaining accurate results in coastal flow simulations. However, in practice, a compromise in the grid resolution is often unavoidable because of a constraint in computing time. As a result, a predictive capability of the model may suffer especially in inundation and recession zones. In this talk, we present the implementation of subgrid techniques accounting for unresolved topography in a single layer mode of the MPAS-Ocean. These techniques use integral properties of high-resolution bathymetry, topography, and land cover to introduce corrections into coarser resolution models, and can improve their accuracy near the land-water interface while having no significant effects in deeper regions. Numerical experiments using a set of test cases with nonstationary shorelines, ranging from an idealized test problem with an analytical solution to a realistic test case of storm surge induced by a tropical cyclone, demonstrate that the subgrid method can substantially improve the predictive capability of the MPAS-O coarse-grid simulations with only a minor increase in the computing time.
