Modeling Coastal Wetlands in the E3SM Land Model

Abstract:
Coastal wetlands represent some of the most productive terrestrial ecosystems and have strong impacts on water quality, carbon and nitrogen cycling, and greenhouse gas balance at regional and global scales. However, E3SM currently does not include representation of coastal wetland areas or their distinctive vegetation, hydrological patterns, or biogeochemical cycling. We have developed new E3SM capabilities for representing coastal wetland processes as part of an Early Career Award project funded by the Earth System Model Development program. Important biogeochemical processes such as salinity and sulfur effects on organic matter decomposition and the production of carbon dioxide and methane are represented by coupling the E3SM Land Model subsurface to the PFLOTRAN reactive transport simulator. Coastal wetland vegetation traits that define highly-productive salt marsh and mangrove ecosystems are represented through the development of new plant functional types and vegetation responses to salinity and inundation. We configured land model simulations using tidal hydrological and salinity boundary conditions to simulate biogeochemical cycling across gradients of salinity and elevation and reproduced observed patterns of carbon cycling and methane fluxes. We are now configuring simulations across coastal regions to project how coastal wetland contributions to regional carbon and nitrogen cycling will respond to changes in sea levels and river flows.
